Flyers Dominate in the Desert, Defeat Yotes 4-2
Coming off a great come from behind win against the Anaheim Ducks last night, the Flyers came into their second matchup of the year against the Phoenix Coyotes with tons of momentum. That momentum gave the Flyers the edge early as they came out buzzing. Just 4:23 into the game, Matt Read proved to be a Yotes killer once again as he netted a powerplay goal to give the Flyers the early lead. Not even 2 minutes later Wayne Simmonds batted a rebound in past Yotes netminder Mike Smith in to make it 2-0 Flyers. The third goal, still in the first period mind you, was a thing of beauty, the top line of Giroux, Jagr, and Hartnell were at it again as Roo set up Kimmo Timonen and Kimmo went behind the net and set up a blast by Claude as he one timed it by Smith. On the powerplay again, Scott Hartnell got his 11th goal of the year as he wristed it by Smith. That would be the end of the Coyotes goalie's night as he was replaced by backup Jason Labarbera. In the 2nd the tide seemed to run somewhat as the Yotes got some momentum rolling of their own. Ray Whitney got a lucky bounce and ripped it by Ilya Bryzgalov to make it 4-1. That would pretty much do it though, with the exception of a last minute goal by Mikkel Boedker to make the final score 4-2.
One player who you had to feel for after this game was Brayden Schenn, Schenn is coming as close as anybody possibly can to getting his first NHL goal. Schenn did look good tonight though, despite not showing up on the scoreboard, he's showing the qualities that make him one of the top prospects in the NHL. The goals will come for this kid, he's just too good to not get them. He's just got quite a bit of bad luck right now.
Up next for the Flyers is the Buffalo Sabres, Buffalo sits in the 7th spot in the East with a record of 14-11-1 while the Flyers sit in the 5th spot in the East with a record of 15-7-3. This is the second game of the year between these two teams as well as the Flyers took the first one by a score of 3-2. Ryan Miller who was out for a while returned tonight and surrendered 2 goals on 34 shots and got the win as the Sabres defeated the Preds 3-2. Let's hope the Flyers can chase Miller just as they did in the first game this year....ok...probably asking for too much there. LET'S GO FLYERS!!
