The Flyers went up against our friends from West PA the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first time this season. It was also the first time that Max Talbot would face his old team. The Flyers came out strong and dominated the first period. Danny Briere got a lucky bounce as his shot bounced off two Penguins and trickled by Marc Andre Fleury. Wayne Simmonds would find the score sheet next with a powerplay goal as he got a great pass from Jakub Voracek. The Flyers added on another goal just about 5 minutes later on a tip in on a pass from Andrej Meszaros to put the Flyers up 3-0 and seemingly in control against the Pens. Then the momentum started to swing a bit, Fleury was making big save after big save and when James Neal netted his 15th of the year on the powerplay. In the 3rd Evgeni Malkin made it 3-2 on a goal right through the 5 hole of Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. And while the Pens would get some more chances on Bryzgalov the Flyers would hang on and win the first game of the season series with the Pens and to put the icing on the cake, take over first place in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference.
The Flyers are now on a 4 game win streak and the team is on a roll lead by the NHL's leading scorer Claude Giroux is leading the way. Scoring the game winner vs the Ducks in OT and then another one vs the Sabres.
Unfortunately for the Flyers, the injury bug keeps biting them. Chris Pronger who at first had a "virus", then had to have knee surgery, and now has a concussion as Flyers GM Paul Holmgren announced it today. Who knows when Pronger will be back, or how long he'll be back when he does considering how things have gone for the Flyers captain this season. It might be time for the Flyers to go and look at acquiring another D man. Kevin Marshall and Marc Andre Bourdon are really good prospects, but I don't think we can ride them as the 5th and 6th D men the rest of the year.
Tommorow the Flyers faceoff against the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 2nd time this year. In the first matchup the Flyers lost in OT to the Bolts 2-1. This time though the Orange and Black are at home and hopefully there'll be a better outcome. LET'S GO FLYERS!
