Sloppy play, bad penalties, great goaltending at the other end, all factors of the Flyers 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals last night. The Flyers were getting dominated early on, and even when they scored the first goal of the game, a goal by Claude Giroux who continued his strong start by scoring his 5th goal in 6 games. From then on though, the Caps would have the advantage. A turnover lead to the first goal, a goal through a screen by Mathieu Perreault, and then just 1 minute and 8 seconds later, Alexander Ovechkin gave the Caps the lead going into the 2nd period. In the second the Flyers did look better, getting more scoring chances and playing a little more crisp, the problem was, Thomas Vokoun who was great all night. Going into the 3rd.....ah the hell with it. Basically, the Caps blew the game open in the 3rd and the only bright spot of the period was the 2nd NHL goal by Sean Couturier with just 15 seconds left.
There weren't really any positives from this game except for the play of Brayden Schenn I guess. The rookie had a solid game while not getting on the score sheet. That sounds like another guy who's had trouble putting the puck in the net, Jaromir Jagr. Jagr, despite not having a goal on the year, has looked solid and soon enough he'll get that goal. The defense looked shaky, the offense had trouble getting it going throughout the game for the most part. Is this loss something to look into though, no. This team isn't perfect, they have their flaws, and these games happen to the best of them. We weren't playing the LOLSenators after all.
Next up for the Flyers, the slow starting St.Louis Blues. The one Blue especially off to a slow start is their goalie Jaroslav Halak, Halak had a solid season last year but in 5 games, Halak has a 3.47 GAA and has a .835 save %. Hopefully we'll see a better game out of the Flyers on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center. LET'S GO FLYERS!
